Moving a Large Home in Newport: Stairs and Tricky Access

Some moves come with a view worth stopping for. This Newport home certainly did, with an incredible outlook over the water and a swimming pool on the balcony.

But getting the furniture into place was a different story. It was a huge house with difficult access and plenty of internal stairs. The sort of move where planning the route matters just as much as loading the truck.

A beautiful home with challenging access

Newport, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, has some spectacular homes. For anyone planning a move, though, the practical details deserve just as much attention as the view.

At this property, the size of the house and the internal staircases were the main challenges. Moving furniture through several levels takes coordination, especially when larger pieces need to pass through turns and landings.

It’s not a job you want to rush

With a large house, unloading the truck is only part of the work. Each item still needs to reach the right room, sometimes up or down several flights of stairs.

Before moving day, tell your removalist which floors the larger pieces are going to. A heavy cabinet going into a ground-floor room is a different job from taking it upstairs through a tight turn.

Photos of the staircases, doorways and landings help your movers understand what they’ll be working with. For more complicated properties, a walkthrough or video can make planning much easier.

Check the furniture route, not just the front door

A sofa might fit through the entrance and still be awkward to move around an internal staircase. Long tables, tall cabinets and bulky bed frames all need enough space along the full route.

Measure any pieces you’re concerned about and discuss whether they can be dismantled. Let your removalist know about delicate finishes or particularly heavy furniture so suitable handling arrangements can be discussed beforehand.

Make a plan for the rooms

In a large home, deciding where furniture belongs before unloading can save unnecessary handling. Label boxes by room and floor, and have someone available to show the team where the larger items should go.

Keep stairs and walkways clear of loose belongings. It sounds simple, but it makes a real difference when furniture needs to travel through several levels of a house.

Worth a moment to take in the view

The outlook from this Newport property was something special, and the balcony pool was quite a sight. It’s one of the memorable parts of working in removals: you get to see some remarkable homes, along with the practical challenges that come with moving into them.
