Moving with Difficult Access: When a Small Van Can Help

A low basement entrance, a narrow driveway or a tight turn can make moving day a bit tricky. Before choosing a truck, it helps to know how close it can actually get to your furniture.

Sometimes, a smaller van can help move items between the property and the main removal truck. It depends on the access, the size of your furniture and where both vehicles can safely park.

Sometimes, the truck just won’t fit

Apartment basements often have height restrictions that rule out a removal truck. Even if an entrance looks wide enough, ramps, tight corners and overhead pipes can limit access further inside.

A smaller vehicle may be an option, but it needs to fit the whole route, not just the entrance. Send your removalist the clearance height and a few photos of the driveway or basement before moving day.

How a shuttle move works

When the main truck cannot get close enough, a suitable smaller vehicle can carry furniture and boxes between the building and the truck. This is often called a shuttle service.

It involves extra loading and unloading, so it needs to be included in the moving plan and quote. Depending on the distance and layout, using trolleys along a safe access route may be more practical. The aim is to choose the option that suits your property.

Check your larger furniture first

A van might fit into the basement, but will your sofa fit inside the van? Long tables, large mattresses and tall cabinets need checking before deciding on a smaller vehicle.

Let your removalist know about bulky pieces and anything that cannot be dismantled. Photos and measurements help work out a sensible plan without surprises on the day.

Speak with building management

For apartment moves, ask about lift bookings, loading areas and permitted moving hours. Check whether the basement can be used for loading and whether any access keys or protective lift covers are required.

It also helps to measure lift doors and check the route from your apartment to the loading point. A clear path makes the job easier for everyone.

Let’s work out the access before moving day

At Meticulous Removals, we bring 14 years of removals experience to moves across Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Access is one of the first things we discuss when planning a move.

You don’t need to have every measurement ready before getting in touch. Send us your pickup and delivery addresses, a quick rundown of what’s moving, and photos or a short video of any tricky access.

Contact us for a quote and we’ll discuss the access, vehicle requirements and available options for your move.
