Victorian terrace houses are part of Paddington’s character. They’re lovely homes, but moving furniture through them can take a bit of working out. A narrow staircase or an awkward landing can quickly become the main challenge when you’re trying to get a large mattress upstairs.
At Meticulous Removals, we know these homes and the neighbourhood well. These moves are familiar territory for us, and knowing what to check beforehand makes a real difference on the day.
Will it fit up the stairs?
One of the first things to check in a terrace house is the staircase. Getting furniture through the front door doesn’t necessarily mean it will make it to the bedroom.
Large mattresses, bed bases and bulky furniture can be difficult to manoeuvre around tight turns. Stair width matters, but so do ceiling height, handrails and the space available on each landing.
Send us photos of the full staircase and measurements of any larger pieces before your move. It helps us spot potential problems while there’s still time to plan.
Sometimes the balcony is the way in
In some terrace houses, a large item that won’t fit up the stairs may need to be hoisted through a balcony. Oversized mattresses are one example we come across.
That’s something to assess and arrange beforehand. Balcony access isn’t suitable for every property or every piece of furniture. The item, the building, the space below and the equipment and team required all need to be considered.
If you remember furniture coming in through the balcony when you moved in, let us know when booking your move out. That’s useful information to have from the start.
Don’t forget the rear lane
Access isn’t always difficult. Some Paddington terraces have a rear lane that offers a much more straightforward way to move furniture.
Depending on the property, the back entrance may provide better loading access than the front. Before moving day, check whether the rear gate can be opened fully and whether the path into the house is clear.
Send us photos of both entrances if you’re unsure. We can discuss which route makes the most sense for your move.
A familiar house style makes planning easier
After 14 years in removals, we know that a terrace-house move needs a little more thought than simply turning up with a truck. Knowing the area and understanding these layouts helps us ask the right questions.
Where can the truck park? Which pieces are going upstairs? Is there a useful rear entrance? Has anything previously needed to go through the balcony?
Once those details are sorted, the job is much easier to organise. There’s no need to assume a terrace move will be a drama, but it pays to flag the tricky bits early.
