Moving Into a Apartment? Here’s What to Organise Before Moving Day

Moving into an apartment involves more than getting your furniture from one address to another. Access to the building, lift availability and parking can all affect how smoothly the day runs.

Whether you’re relocating to Barangaroo, Bondi Junction, Green Square or the Sydney CBD, a little preparation helps prevent delays and makes the move easier for everyone involved.

At Meticulous Removals, we bring 14 years of removals experience to helping customers plan their move, with careful handling and clear communication from the start.

Speak to Your Building Manager Early

Before confirming your moving arrangements, contact the building manager or strata representative at both properties.

Ask whether the building has specific requirements for removals, including:

  • Permitted moving days and hours.

  • A service lift or a lift reservation.

  • Loading dock access and vehicle height restrictions.

  • Insurance documentation.

  • Protection requirements for lifts and common areas.

Each building has its own procedures. Even if you’re only moving a few streets away, the arrangements at your new address may be completely different.

Coordinate Lift Access at Both Addresses

A reserved lift can make a significant difference when moving furniture between an apartment and a truck.

If your building requires a booking, confirm the time slot and how long you can use the lift. Let your removalist know before moving day so the loading, travel and unloading schedule can be planned around it.

For larger items, check the lift dimensions and door openings. A sofa that fits inside your apartment may still be difficult to manoeuvre through the lift or shared corridors.

Check Insurance Paperwork Requirements

Some apartment buildings request a Certificate of Currency before allowing a removal company to work on the premises.

Ask your building manager which documents they need and when they must be submitted. Forward those requirements to your removalist early, leaving time for the paperwork to be reviewed.

A Certificate of Currency confirms an insurance policy is current. Cover for your belongings during a move is a separate question worth discussing with your removalist.

Plan Where the Truck Will Park

In busy parts of Sydney, the distance between the truck and the building entrance can have a real impact on the move.

If a loading dock is available, check its booking requirements, clearance height and vehicle restrictions. If the truck needs to park on the street, discuss the available access with your removalist beforehand.

Photos of the entrance, driveway and loading area can help identify potential difficulties before the truck arrives.

Prepare Large Furniture and Shared Access Areas

Beds, dining tables and larger furniture may need to be dismantled before they can pass through apartment doorways or lifts.

Tell your removalist about oversized or particularly delicate pieces when requesting your quote. Include any narrow hallways, stairs or awkward corners at either address.

It’s also helpful to confirm who is responsible for arranging any protection required by the building, such as lift padding or floor coverings.

Give Your Removalist the Full Picture

For a more accurate quote, provide:

  • Pickup and delivery addresses, including floor levels.

  • Lift availability and any booked time slots.

  • Parking or loading dock details.

  • A furniture list or clear photos.

  • Details of stairs, long corridors and oversized items.

These details help your removalist estimate the time and team needed for your move.
